Dialogue : Journaliste et ancien enfant ouvrier
Journalist: Good morning, sir. Thank you for agreeing to this interview. Could you tell me what your job was when you were a child?
Old Man: Good morning. Oh yes, I worked in a textile factory when I was only eight years old.
Journalist: How long did you work there?
Old Man: I worked there for about six years, until I turned fourteen.
Journalist: What were your working conditions like?
Old Man: It was terrible. We had to start at dawn and sometimes finish after dark. The machines were loud and dangerous.
Journalist: Were you allowed to take breaks?
Old Man: No, we weren’t allowed to stop, not even when we were tired.
Journalist: Did you ever get injured?
Old Man: Yes, once I was cleaning a machine while it was still running. I was trying to reach a thread when my hand got caught. I was screaming! I was in terrible pain.
Journalist: That must have been awful! Could you go to school at that time?
Old Man: No, we couldn’t. We had to work to help our families survive.
Journalist: What a hard life you had! What courage you showed!
